Ever wonder why all pirates seem to have a Bristol accent? The Bristol Channel has a long history of piracy and smuggling. Unscrupulous merchants would land in small ports along the Severn and repack cargo on to smaller ships to avoid customs charges in Bristol. A prime target for pirates would have been the Newport Medieval Ship, which traded between Spain, France and Britain in the 15th century. It has been brought to life after being preserved in the mud and painstakingly catalogued over the past decade, and can be viewed in Newport along with artefacts from the ship's cargo.
